who actually watched the debate, finds that 67% think mitt romney was the clear winner while only 25% think president obama won. let's get some more now from our chief political analyst gloria borger. gloria, how damaging was this debate to president obama last night? >> i think we have to let the polls come in. and we'll let the voters decide. but i think you saw from the way the president was behaving on the stump this morning that even he knows that this was a pretty damaging debate for him. look, mitt romney showed up as somebody who was reasonable, as somebody who criticized the president while being respectful of the president. and as somebody those independent voters, those undecided voters, those persuadable voters could take a look at and say, you know, i could see him as a plausible president. just by being there mitt romney was elevated to the level of the president. and he effectively i would have to say took charge of the debate. and the president just sort of did not really push him or force him or challenge him the way we just saw on the stump right now. >> i was prett

when he gets on that debate stage in denver, is go off the president not just on what romney says are ineffectual policies like the president's healthcare law and stimulus packages, but the cost of those policies as compared to romney's own perscriptions that call for smaller less expensive government. for the president what he's going to try to do is say look, maybe things aren't so great but it is partly the fault of george w. bush and the republicans who were in office prior to the democrats taking control in 2009, so we need time to fix it, and by the way, the president will also say that he wants to increase taxes on people like mitt romney to help pay down some of that debt. >> reporter: we just put of that graphic there showing the $16 trillion of debt and there are so many digits it almost doesn't fit on the tv screen across the screen there, as you can see. but haven't americans in some way become number to astronomical numbers? how serious is this in. >> they have become number. is it the new normal this massive spilling of red ink but it raises three problems which i do

sides are doing it and to not quite mediate in that way. both campaigns, the romney campaign is particularly in the last few days has said that during the debates they're going to fact check live which sometimes can mean just saying something isn't true when it is true or saying something is true when it isn't true. and i think that because the speed has really increased, there's a lot more for reporters to do. um, there's also the issue i mentioned about money and spending and keeping an eye on that. i think there's some great work that's being done in tracking spending and donors and figuring it out. but there's also a lot more money on the table because of citizens united. so that's a real challenge. and in some ways to bring the optimism and pessimism together about this, i think that this might be the election cycle where both sides -- it's become clear what the tools are for both sides. there's money, there's media access, there's social media, there's ways to quickly get information out and really ask questions. and the last few weeks before people actually vote, we're
